Circular aviation connectors, also known as plug‑and‑socket assemblies, are widely used in various electrical circuits to connect and disconnect circuits. Given their wide‑ranging types and application scenarios, proper selection is critical to improve the reliability of aviation connectors.

How to choose the right aviation connector?


An aviation connector is an electromechanical component for connecting electrical circuits. Its electrical parameters shall be the primary consideration for selection. Key electrical parameters for industrial equipment include rated voltage, rated current, dielectric withstand voltage, contact resistance, mechanical service life, operating temperature, flame retardancy and ingress protection grade.


1. Rated voltage, also called operating voltage, mainly depends on the insulating material and the clearance between contact pairs. The connector generally works properly below its rated voltage.


2. Rated current, also called operating current. Similar to rated voltage, normal performance is guaranteed below rated current. Excessive current may cause short‑circuits, which shall be highly noted.


3. Dielectric withstand voltage: the critical voltage that insulating sections between contact pairs, or between insulating sections and ground, can withstand for a specified duration without breakdown. It refers to the transient peak voltage the product can endure; equipment damage will occur if this value is exceeded.


4. Contact resistance: resistance generated at the contact interface of two conductive contacts.


5. Mechanical service life: the number of continuous mating‑unmating cycles. Higher cycles indicate better performance, normally ranging from 500 to 1000 cycles.


6. Operating temperature: the temperature range for normal operation, typically ‑40℃ to 80℃. Stable performance is guaranteed within this range.


7. Since current flows through all working aviation connectors, fire risks exist. Connectors shall resist ignition and achieve rapid self‑extinguishment in case of fire. Prioritize products with flame‑retardant and self‑extinguishing insulating materials.


8. Ingress‑protection requirements (waterproof or non‑waterproof) vary with service environments. Common ratings include non‑waterproof IP44, waterproof IP65 and IP67.
